GEDLICH Racing has announced that the Formula Winter Series is set to have a capacity grid in 2027, totalling 56 cars.
The previously-revealed shift to a tournament format has created a larger 56-car capacity for 2027. In remarkably fast fashion, these slots have been filled by an array of leading outifts from across Europe. A number of interested teams that have previously missed out on grid slots will be a part of the 2027 season, alongside frontrunners from previous Formula Winter Series seasons.
As a result of the format shift, 2027’s Formula Winter Series will mark the largest congregation of competitors in the category’s history.
Robin Selbach, CSO, from GEDLICH Racing said: “Courtesy of our new format for 2027, we are able to welcome 24 additional cars to the Formula Winter Series. We knew the level of demand was well beyond our previous capacity, but seeing it materialise into a 56-car entry allocation is truly impressive. Along with our success forming a capacity grid for the inaugural FIA-certified F4 German Championship, the popularity of the Formula Winter Series emphasises the strength of Formula 4 racing globally.”
The new tournament format will see the field split into two randomly-drawn groups of 28, which will then form the grids for two races in each group. The highest-scoring 14 drivers from each group will then transfer to the Final, while the remainder of the grid will also get a third competitive outing in the form of the Challengers Race.
The 2027 Formula Winter Series will begin at Estoril from 21-24 January, as the field of young stars join the GT & GT4 Winter Series for an action-packed weekend at Portugal’s traditional home of motorsport.
